Porsche 924 Carrera GT was a powerful surprise-2

If the best classic cars look great, they are great for driving and exotic are rare, then the Porsche 924 Carrera GT is where the best classic cars are. The 924 Carrera GT looked like a supercar, sounds and slopes like the Carrera.

If anyone else built the 924, it would probably be perceived as a brilliant little sports car. He was strong, remarkably efficient and deceptively fast, making the most of his rather modest two-liter engine, but, according to Porsche fans, he was considered a bit shy. Then came the incredible 924 Carrera GT, putting the critics into place. Not only was the 924 Carrera GT incredibly fast, it had the style and aggressiveness of street fighters.

Of the 406 units built in 200, it was intended for Germany and 75 for the UK, which was the only place where you could still get the full benefit of Carrera. The speed of 130 miles per hour on the speed limiter 6400 rpm, then you go to the 5th and 150 miles per hour can be clearly seen. This is a real car at 150 miles per hour, which will accelerate from zero to 60 in less than seven seconds, despite the turbo, which actually does not work to 3000, in combination with a typical Carrera factory, not intended for racing tracks.

this is not enough, as it is now simple to make a powerful monster; then fuel consumption figures were noticed. Porsche has established digital ignition controls to ensure maximum engine efficiency and improved aerodynamics. With and eye for detailed work on the body is preserved, GT is the same as that of cousin Carrera, despite the wide wings, additional shovels, a larger rear spoiler lip helps. In the combined European consumption test, the figures were taken at a steady 55 and 75 mph and, on average, with the city reading, the Carrera GT received a rating of 25.8 miles per gallon against 26.1 for an undisclosed European 924!

Bucket-hood was the first sign of surprise in the engine compartment, which contained a new configuration. The compression rises by up to 8.5: 1, and the bucket leads to a flat intercooler. The engine reaches 210 horsepower at 6000 rpm. The power plant is connected to a heavy five-speed shift, with four first in the "H" and the fifth place in the corner on the left rear. Gearing speeds - 35-65-100-130 and higher.

Riding is resistant to rebound on coarser surfaces, but if you let it search for its own path, it can be a dazzlingly fast and ball to ride. 215/60 tires maintain stability, while tires with the lower 55/50 series are optional. Fender flashes were made from the same bounce back material as the nose of the 928, preventing small bumps. The 924 Carrera GT was available in black or Guards red and the “Carrera” was embossed on the front right fender.

Inside the Carrera there is a luxury, despite the character of the car competition, electric windows and mirrors, a removable roof panel and air-conditioned floor covering and a full radio / tape setting.

Very few will have the experience, but any old Porsche fan who gets his hands on the Carrera GT and an empty road must agree that Porsche is eligible for 924 this time.

Group 4,924 on the race track

In the racetrack, although the Porsche 911-based driver is still king, the Porsche plant has largely scored 924 really competitive cars. The 924 Group 4 racer personifies the intense effort put into the car before he sees the race track. This car went through wind tunnel experiments, 600-mile washboards, 24-hour tests in Weissach, 30-hour sessions on a test bench, a test for an electric pulsator, 24-hour tests at Paul Ricard, tests of rain in Weissach, and even endurance tests on the chassis dynamo meter.

In the first trial of the 924 year at Le Mans in 1980, all three teams completed the race, taking 6th, 12th and 13th places. The reaction of the drivers was extremely positive, especially how well the cars were processed in the rain.

The car uses a lightweight fiberglass cap, headlights and rear windows. A front air dam and a rear spoiler were also installed. The hull was lightened, compensated and reinforced by welding in rolls. 375 hp engine basically it is a turbocharged turbocharged engine of the 924th engine. Fuel injection included a pressure boost sensor that enriches the mixture at the upper end, but does not allow it to work too richly at the lower end. The total weight of the car, the race is ready, is 2079 pounds. Four disc disc brakes with four wheels are installed, using the largest 13-inch rotors and long-distance supports, as well as 917 axle axles. The gearbox is a five-speed Porsche installation using type 935 synchronizers and a locked differential. BBS wheel and Bilstein gas pressure absorbers are used everywhere.

924 Turbos demonstrated excellent speed capabilities, but, as in any new race, there are some minor problems to prevent the real potential of the car. In the 924s there was a long way to try to outshine the hold that 935 had at the IMSA races. They competed in the ISSA GTO division, working against the likes of the BMW M-1 and Datsun ZX Turbos and guided by such names as Al-Holbert, Doc Bundy, Rick Mears and Johnny Rutherford.
