Car rental in Costa Rica is an opportunity to explore the remote beaches and quiet corners of this stunningly beautiful country. Factors Affecting Car Rental Costs
• Compulsory insurance
Third-party insurance, which may be known as TPI, PDW (waiver of partial damage), SLI (additional liability insurance) and other acronyms, is a legal requirement. Car rental operators must charge the customer for this coverage, which may or may not be clear in the quote received by the customer.
Insurance itself is not a problem. After all, many other countries require car renters to pay compulsory insurance; including: New Zealand, Italy and Mexico, as well as a number of US states, such as California. The problem that causes controversy in Costa Rica is that this cost is not always clearly displayed on the website of the car hire operator or in the quote. Customers will then learn about the additional cost of their rent upon arrival.
The cost of compulsory insurance options from the company to the company and will depend on the category of car, which is also removed. If the customer’s credit card does not provide CDW, the customer will need to purchase this internal coverage.
Car rental operators require written confirmation that a customer’s credit card is provided by CDW. Ask the car rental operator for the exact information about what they need and in what form. Some may accept a forwarded letter from the credit card company, but others may ask to print a copy at the time of rental.
• deposit
The required deposit amount will depend on whether the customer wants to use the car rental operator in their own CDW or accept this coverage with a credit card. Expect to pay a much higher deposit if the internal CDW is rejected. The deposit may also depend on the car model. This amount, which will be held on the credit card of the tenant until the end of the rental period, can range from $ 750 to $ 3,500. • Airport taxes
Customers who rent at the counter of the car rental operator in the airport building are required to pay airport tax.
These car hire operators with a counter at San Jose San Samara International Airport (SJO) are Alamo / National, Budget, Dollar, Economy and Hertz. These companies will add an additional tax of 12% to the rental price.

• Additional payments and other taxes
There are a number of other mandatory fees that car rental operators can add to the rental price, display on the screen or show in a quote, or leave it undisclosed until the client arrives. The experience of chatting on international websites shows that when staff are trained on the terms and conditions governing the main office (usually the USA); they understand little of the policies that must be respected in Costa Rica.
Car rental comparison
In May / June 2013, I compared the prices and services of a number of car hire operators in Costa Rica and published the results. Exclusion of companies from the final comparison
Budget, Economy, Faceless and Toyota, but these four companies did not provide accurate online rates. Faceless can provide quotes by email and phone, but are inconsistent with the price of different seasons.
Avis is excluded only from price comparisons, as they do not have an intermediate category of SUVs in their fleet.
Comparative information
The cost of renting a car, all taxes and premiums and third-party insurance costs (presumably) are calculated and estimated accordingly, based on a weekly rental of BeGo or a similar intermediate 4x4 from San Jose / Alajuela location (not from the airport).

Comparison summary
Interestingly, there is not one clear, expensive, or cheap company that compares. The difference in the ranking between the seasons is noted, and customers should consider vacation dates when choosing a car rental operator. For example, Thrifty looks like the most expensive for both the low and the brachial season, but only in the fourth position in the rating for the High season.
It is also important that prices do not match the rating with car rental operators in other car categories.
