First generation (1972-1980):
In 1972, Mercedes-Benz introduced the W116 line, which is officially called the S-Class. Produced from 1972 to 1980, the W116 series was distinguished by independent suspension and disc brakes with four wheels. Models 280, 350 and 450 (version 4.5L) differed versions of SE and SEL. Production W116 total 473,035 units. It was a stunning sedan for Mercedes-Benz, and for the first time in the company's history, the car had an obvious, blatant and external emphasis on safety, set higher than pure style prospects. Overall, the design included numerous safety features developed on the basis of “vehicles for safety research” in the mid-to-late 1960s to the early 1970s.

The second generation W126 (1979-1991):
The W126 series took place at the end of 1979 in 1980, and in March 1980 as the 1981 model in the USA and Australia, replaced the W116 line. The W126 line was distinguished by improved aerodynamics and increased aluminum blocks. In 1981 in Australia, the W126 S-Class won the Carls of the Wheels Award. W126 was manufactured from 1979 to 1991 with an update in the middle of the cycle. Coupé models based on the S-Class were reintroduced into the W126 (380/500 SEC). The total sales of the W126 S-Class sedans reached 818,036 units, and also sold 74,060 coupes.
In 1981, the W126 introduced a driver-side airbag, patented by Mercedes-Benz in 1971, as well as passenger-side airbags (in 1988), seat belt pretensioners and traction control. It was the first production car with a standard airbag, and at the end of 1991 in Europe there were only a few other manufacturers who offered an airbag.

Third generation W140 / C140 (1991-1998)
W140 costs 25% more than W126. It replaced and showed double-glazed windows, a self-closing trunk lid and doors, power windows with pinch protection (lowering when colliding with obstacles), rear parking marks in the US (which appeared on the rear wings when they were turned back), and the system heating, which radiated warm air, and residual energy was available after the engine was turned off.

The fourth generation W220 (1998-2005):
As is the case with each new S-Class, the W220 is welcome in new products, such as Airmatic air suspension and active ventilated seats (which use miniature fans in the seats to move air through the perforations). A navigation system with a central console display, as well as a COMAND input control system, has appeared. Other options included remote entry and ignition, a radar-controlled Distronic cruise control system and a cylinder cut-off system called Active Cylinder Control. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system was introduced to the North American S-Class market in 2003, complementing the traditional rear wheel configurations.

Fifth generation W221 (2005-2013):
In the fall of 2005, the new universal W221 was introduced at the Frankfurt International Motor Show with sales, which began in the fall of 2005, and since 2006, to other markets. The W221 S-Class made its North American premiere at the 2006 North American show International Auto Show in January. The W221 is slightly larger in size than its predecessor, and it is equipped with three newly developed engines with power increases of up to 26%. The interior is completely new, all materials have been modernized and made for a more luxurious ride, and the gearbox lever of the center console has been replaced with a switch mounted on the column. New technology features on the W221 include infrared night vision and the latest Mercedes-Benz pre-collision system. The W221 has a sharper exterior style (especially wide arcs) and technological improvements. The W221 is the second generation of the S-Class, which is produced exclusively in the style of a sedan.

A special armored version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, known as the S-Guard, was released. Features include the ability to withstand small-arms fire and some explosive devices, a self-closing fuel tank and an alarm system. [37] In 2009, Mercedes-Benz launched the long wheelbase S-Guard, known as the Guard Pullman. This model is 45 centimeters longer than the standard model, and also has a higher roof and a higher rear window with a different rake.

Awards:
