The need for home schooling of an older dog is not as rare as you might expect, and it may become necessary for various reasons. For example, you may have your dog for many years without any problems, until your pet can use the toilet normally due to a long illness, and then, when he / she has recovered, the new habit is stuck,
On the other hand, and perhaps more likely, you might have introduced the older dog to a rescue organization and either spent some time training him, or the dog was used to keep it outside in the kennel. These are just a few examples, but there may be other reasons why your dog was not properly trained in the toilet. The thing to remember is that this is not the fault of the dog and not embarrassed with it, it will not help.
The first thing to do is take into account what is happening.
Is your dog doing his business around your home here, there and everywhere and without caring in the world, or has he chosen a special place to use as a toilet?
If he chose a particular area, as soon as you cleaned up the mess, you may want to move your bed to this area and put it on top of it. Dogs do not like to sleep in their sleeper, and therefore this can be an effective deterrent.
What time does your dog create a mess? Is it always at a certain time (s)?
If your dog seems to have a certain time when he creates a mess, he probably got used to work at the time and was otherwise traced. If so, try to be close at the time, and as soon as the dog seems to be ready for business, go outside to get involved in this business, and then praise him for being such a good boy / girl and, perhaps, for her a small treat as a reward. Stick to your weapon, be patient and keep doing this, your dog will learn at the end. If the time you have chosen for your favorite toilet is not convenient for you, you can gradually pull it outside a little sooner or later each time, until he / she gets used to what is best for you. But be patient. This may take some time, but in the end it will be worth it.
If a dog seems impossible to train, especially if it is an old dog that seems to have acquired bad new tricks, it may be a good idea to check with his / her vet to make sure that the medical condition does not cause problems.
Remember, however, that even when your dog found out that there is a place on the street for your business, and that certain time is your preferred time to do this business, the dog is a dog, not a car. His internal work is not a clockwork, and they do not work like a clock. From time to time they may work a little quickly or slowly, and your pet may need a little sooner or later, so keep the signs in mind. If your dog becomes restless and distracting, or she starts sniffing or scratching the door, this may be a sign that he / she has urgent work to take care of her, and she needs to go outside and start working on it.
The key words to remember when training your dog are patience and kindness. The first one you keep for yourself and the second one you give to the dog.
