Blast from the past
It all started with the need for quick and easy intelligence (military surveillance of the area to find an enemy or identify strategic features) vehicle that could effectively move around any terrain to replace the motorcycle of the American army and modified Ford Model T cars in July 1940. Army opened a bid for production, in which they invited more than 100 manufacturers and set a list of vehicle specifications.
Initially, only the Willys-Overland and American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company responded. However, the Ford Motor Company entered the picture a little later. Since then, three companies have competed for a lucrative government contract. After 49 days, Bantam built its field car, while each company produced prototypes for testing in record time.
Three companies were able to build 70 vehicle models after they delivered their prototypes to the army in the summer of 1940. Willis-Overland developed the "Willie Square," and Ford developed a model GP (General Purpose), also known as the Pygmy.
In November 1940, the army seized these vehicles, which exceeded their technical characteristics, but later realized the need to increase the limit for the next round of vehicles.
In March 1941, the army released another round of contract. Each of the three companies was supposed to produce 1,500 cars. Bantam developed the 40 BRC, Ford improved GP Pygmies, while Willys-Overland called its cars quad bikes. After a series of tests, analysis and evaluation, the US Army chose Willys-Overland, the primary manufacturer.
Origin of name
There were many explanations as to where the word “Jeep” originated. Some say they informally named him after Eugene Jeep, a character in the Popeye comic for soldiers, so hypnotized by new cars. The most widely known theory is that the military designation of a GP (for state or general purpose) was vague in the word “jeep”, and President Willis-Overland, Joe Fraser, claims that he coined the term “jeep”, interrupting the initial GP their model car. Willys-Overland was also a company that filed an application for the brand name of the original trademark in February 1943.
