One of the most beloved architectural styles in America is the plan of the bungalow Craftsman. The American movement on arts and crafts has been popularized since the last years of the 19th century at the beginning of the 20th century, but still remains a favorite with architects, designers, and also homeowners. Opposite the Victorian century, where excess decoration, decoration and accessories often filled the dwelling, making it tasteless and uncomfortable, the artisan style offered open spaces, switching to natural materials and a simpler interior with less clutter. Many considered this a “breath of fresh air” after a sophisticated Victorian style.
One of the most famous American architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, included many Artisan ideas into his projects. At about the same time, Gustav Stickley began producing furniture for craftsmen and published a magazine called The Craftsman, which made plans for a southern home for craftsmen in the style of "folk style" available to people throughout the United States by mail. Thus, the regions of the country where the units have not yet been built, suddenly got access to new homes.
The artisan movement also began a shift in how Americans lived. Cities began to flourish, and now many are moving to the suburbs. Suddenly, homeownership was not out of reach and soon the American dream. The artisan-style house gave Americans the opportunity to live simply and comfortably, surrounding themselves with natural materials that were usually offered by the rural life of the country.
However, upper and middle class Americans, who still preferred the decorative style of the Victorian century, did not approve of the artisan style and still preferred their luxurious plans for mansions. But an ordinary middle-class person who could not afford a house could now buy a plan for the house of artisans, since its materials were mass-produced. Craftsman style houses usually included nature in design and were less expensive to create, and were also easy to maintain. It was the perfect combination for the first homeowner!
There are many characteristics that includes the House of Artisans. The houses of the craftsmen are made of wood, stone and / or plaster, have low pitched lines, wide eaves with triangular brackets, open rafters and numerous windows. These houses usually have large front porches with thick square or round pillars, stone porches and stone chimneys. The internal parts of the houses have open floor plans with several corridors, internal lighted ceilings, dark wooden fences and moldings, built-in seats and many cabinets and shelves.
