In 1907, Dr. William Mathias Scholl founded Scholl Shoe. The son of German immigrants in the United States, Dr. Scholl began working in a small shoe store that specialized in comfortable shoes in 1901. Clients with painful conditions of the legs inspired him to learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the foot. He devoted his life to understanding the 52 bones and the complex system of muscles, tendons and ligaments that make up the human leg.
In 1904, Dr. Scholl graduated from Illinois Medical College as a doctor of medicine. In 1912, he founded the College of Hyrodia and Orthopedics in Illinois with a shoemaker, pharmacist, chemist, chiropodologist and five other doctors. The college was later renamed the College of Dr. William M. Scholl in Pediatric Medicine, it is part of Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, Illinois. Today he trains about a third of all American podiatrists.
In the year of his graduation in 1904, Dr. Scholl made and sold his first foot care product, a foot for arch relief. By 1907, he founded the company Scholl Manufacturing Co. Inc. In 1913, the first opening of the Comfort Comfort Service in London opened in the world.
Dr. Scholl never stopped inventing devices to help clients with all kinds of foot and leg diseases. By the 1930s, the Scholl brand had sold compression hosiery to help against swollen ankles and varicose veins. Dr. Scholl has created a variety of damping devices designed to improve a wide range of conditions for the legs.
