Wool has been used for thousands of years for a wide range of things. Essentially a fiber made from sheep, yak and goat hair, this is an incredibly versatile textile with an amazing amount of applications. 80% of the world comes in the production of clothing. Clothing, such as sweaters, hats and coats, is highly valued, especially when it is made from more luxurious material. Many varieties of wool allow many different applications - this means that very little of the product disappears. An incredibly soft wool, such as Merino, is used in clothing; whereas coarse wool is used as a fantastic insulating material and stuffing.
Most applications of wool are of ancient origin; however, humans are in a constant evolutionary process in the collection, development, and application of wool. Wool is desirable for both its decorative and functional purpose. Multifaceted fiber has many positive characteristics, including its durability, flexibility and resistance to water.
When used in the manufacture of clothing, wool can be woven, knitted or felted. It is widely used in sweaters, hats, trousers, coats, scarves, gloves and sportswear. Wool mixed with other natural or synthetic fibers increases resistance to products. It is also used in pet garments, including saddle pads and blankets for horses, camels and dogs. Coats and blankets for dogs and horses are made of wool to provide extra warmth and a natural layer of insulation during the cold months of the year. As well as to look stylish and keep warm, wool is used during embroidery. Merino wool has been used in baby products such as breast wraps and baby sleeping bags. In ancient times, Greek warriors felted their helmets, and Roman legionnaires used woolen felt breastplates.
Departing from clothing, the other 20% of wool produced is used in many ways around the house. Wool can often be seen in blankets, rugs and curtains. Many types of furniture are stuffed with wool. Wool is even used for insulation and sound insulation. For centuries, wool has been used in flooring; Wool carpets are known for their durability and bright colors. Today's wool carpets are antistatic and absorb noise. Carpet is used to add height and insulation to carpets. Congenital resistance to flame and heat makes it one of the safest of all household textiles.
Differently processed wool, which is incredibly popular, is felted wool. This is created when the wool is compacted. Wool felt is used in shoes, hats, waterproof jackets, lining for furniture legs, bookshelves and tablecloths. Also used in the piano, it is felt wool that drowns out the hammers inside - creating this great piano sound.
Industrial use of wool includes sheets of bonded coarse wool, used for thermal and acoustic insulation in the home structure, as well as gaskets for sucking oil spills. It is also used to absorb odors and noise in heavy cars and stereo speakers.
As animal protein, wool is an effective soil fertilizer, acting as a source of low nitrogen and ready-made amino acids.
